Girl in Pieces: summary, analysis, review

Charlie Davis is about to be 18 very soon. She has faced worst situations which even many adults might have never faced. Her father died by suicide when she was a baby. Her mother physically abused her. She didn't love and care about Charlie. At a point, she looses her only best friend Elis as she was almost dead and she blames herself for that. She has lived on streets. She has been trafficked. Throughout her trauma she uses cutting herself with glass as a way to cope up with emotional turmoils. She was aggressive and voilent. She has been to the centre for preventing self-harm. She had also developed PTSD. Her mother gave up on taking her responsibility even before she turned 18. She had mickey who tried to help her to heal. She fell for him. But he was only a genuine friend of hers. It was rightly said by her friends whom she met at the centre that no normal person would ever love that kind of a girl.  She says that she distanced people by her cutting habit and agressive behaviour but she wanted and needed affectionate touch. She gets into relationship with an ex- singer Riley West who isn't mentally stable either. He was a 27 yrs old alcoholic man who has been married once. Their tale wasn't lovey-dovey. It was ebb and flow about which he sings a song in a concert at the end. Finally, Charlie finds salvation in drawing and is happy to know that her friend Ellis is alive.

This book is written to create awareness about self-harm, what causes self-harm and it's consequences. It will make you develop empathy for people who deal with such problems. Charlie's psychological and physical trauma is explained very much in detail. However, you may not be sympathetic towards her unless you are in her shoe because throughout the story, there's only pain and a little relief to it. Her true personality- the person hidden behind the trauma is not much revealed which is not writer's fault as there are people whose lives are only full of tragedies. So if you only wanna read from entertainment pov then this book is not for you.
