1984 by George Orwell : summary, review, analysis

Updated: Nov 27, 2023

1984 by George OrwellA not so stereotypical love story or a story of betrayal ( or rather a story about human instincts under harsh conditions) between a party member named Winston and a girl working in Ministry of Truth named Julia. They both hated the party and they were secretly breaking it's rules. Even O' Brien- an inner party member hated the party according to Winston. So Winston and O' Brien team up in the later half.( Actually O' Brien tricks him)It tells us how during world war common people were misguided. Oceania used be in war with either with east asia or Eurasia and in alliance with the either of the opposition. The wars were faked for the benefit of the politicians and inner party members. The common men became poorer and the autocrats became richer. In the name of nationalism, sentiments of common people were misused.  People used to get vaporized ( abducted- read to know what used to happen with them). There used to be shortage of food and other basic needs. Love was a sin. Sex was prohibited. An anti-sex league was formed to suppress the natural instincts of a human. They were all slaves to big brother( leader of Oceania) and no one could revolt. Then how did Winston and his lover carried on their affair? And how did things end for them?

It was v.v.v informative about the world war era. It's a somewhat Smitty but it shouldn't change your opinion about the novel. How common people were manipulated and their minds were controlled( thoughts were destroyed) - it's v. much in detail. Some plots are v. Intense. I wud love to re read it's ending. Also, the party slogan-

WAR IS PEACE

FREEDOM IS SLAVERY

IGNORANCE IS STRENGHT

has a hidden meaning. Do read this novel to find it out.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐I expected a lil more story in it. Though it was also a story about spying, it was not a typical detective story.
